Restored A4 steam locomotive ‘Bittern’ ran again at the Watercress Line’s 40th Anniversary of the End of Southern Steam event. In August 2001 the Mid Hants Railway was given the task of rebuilding the Gresley A4 Class steam locomotive #60019 'Bittern'. It was restored for its owner in six years at Ropley. Famous A4 'Mallard', now part of the National Railway Museum collection at York, holds the world speed record for steam locomotives (126 mph on 3rd July 1938)
'Bittern' hauled its first passenger service trains since restoration at this special event commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the End of Southern Steam.
Also running were: Bodmin; 'Canadian Pacific' running as 'Orient Line' #35008; Ivatt Tank #41312; Standard Five #73096;
and 'Wadebridge' visiting us for a year (with thanks to owners Wadebridge (34007) Locomotive Ltd)
Diesels working  were Class 117 DMU, Class 33 Crompton and 08.
Other features included breakdown trains, 'dumped' locos, civil engineering train and freight trains.

Hi Tony
Three of us from Bluebell P-Way popped over on Saturday and I have to say I think it was one of the best MHR galas I’ve had the privilege of attending As someone born many years after the real end of SR steam, I never thought I’d get chance to take my own pictures of some grubby Bulleids!
And of course the A4 was a bit more than an added bonus ….
Congratulations to everyone involved in making it happen, but a massive thanks to your P-Way guys who very kindly took us around at short notice - I can’t thank them enough as we had an absolutely fantastic day!
Hope you like the attached pic and     Movie  (7th July 2007, 2.7MB)

I wanted to congratulate the railway on a great weekend.  How good did the locos look??!!
A couple of times I had to pinch myself that it wasn't really the end. Watching the locos come back to Ropley at the end of the day was amazingly evocative
I overheard someone who really summed it up: they said - "It makes you not want to go home and leave the engines....."
I've attached a few pics (full series

Subject: Visit Sunday 8th July
Hi Tony
My apologies for not sending this email earlier but better late than never I guess.
As a young teenager I did a couple of years fairly intense train-spotting, as did many of my friends. A bunch of us got around the country quite a bit in that time until sport, girls and rock 'n' roll took precedence! I suspect none of us has lost our love of steam though.
I well remember the bike rides from Newbury to Basingstoke and the thrill of being on the platform when a Merchant Navy class literally thundered through.Regular trips to Kings Cross are also remembered with great nostalgia. The wheel slip of the A4s as they attempted to get a grip was a sight to behold.
I have visited the MHR a couple of times in the past year and had made a mental note of the 40th Anniversary event and then completely forgot about it. However, completely by chance (or was it subliminal forces at work) I dropped in to Ropley late afternoon on Sunday 8th July in the hope of some photographs. I quickly realised my original oversight but as most of the crowds had left and the locomotives were returning to the shed I couldn't believe my luck and set about capturing as much of the atmosphere as possible.

Bittern was a wonderful sight and together with the Bulleids brought all those memories flooding back. My two favourite locomotives in one place 47 years on. Magic!
I still have my 1960 copy of the ABC British Railways Locomotives which now has a line underneath Bittern which I never did see in the sixties.
I'm sure you have received many photographs taken over that weekend but I'm attaching a few of my own anyway which attempt to depict things in a slightly different style. I hope you can use them.
Many congratulations and a very big thank you to all the volunteers who make the MHR and others like it such an evocative experience for us old timers and such an exciting one for the youngsters.
Kind regards
Roy Bishop

Dear Tony
We visited the gala last weekend, our first visit to the Mid Hants.  We both thoroughly enjoyed the days, the locos, the dirt, the engineering, signal box and even managed to stay until closing time at Medstead at the end of Saturday. Sunday tea and cake at Alresford was very good too!  A grand display in great weather (including sunburn on the Saturday) with extremely friendly and polite operatives. I attach a couple of pictures for your interest I hope!  (See above  ... tw)
We will be back later in the year - it was only a 4 hour journey early on the Saturday morning!
Kind regards

Sorry this is a little late! I would like you to pass on my extreme thanks to all concerned on what was a fantastic event. The authenticity of the loco's was superb, faultless running and brilliantly organised. The freight and breakdown train was also much appreciated.
I used to be a working volunteer and had my induction the same day as you, unfortunately living 50 miles away, getting married and work commitments took their toll!
Please say hello to Keith Loughlin who I used to fire for. I really miss not being involved and Sunday has really made me determined to make the effort to come back more often. The line is really looking superb and is a credit to all who put in so much effort for everyone to enjoy.
Again please pass my best wishes to all involved, it was the best day out I have had at a steam line for ages
Very Best Regards

Though I'm not a dyed in the wool Southern aficionado I must congratulate everyone concerned on such a fabulous day. The organisation could not be faulted and I spent the greater part of the day by the railings at Ropley loco depot happily watching the action unfold before me. Visitors had clearly travelled from far and wide and much pleasure was gained from overhearing conversations in accents from Cornwall to Lancashire, fiercely debating the merits of their various favourite locos, from L & Y Pugs to GWR Granges!
I have visited the MHR many times, and the thing that always strikes me is the friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff, both paid and volunteer.

May I add my congratulations too to all concerned on another fantastic gala day on the MHR on Saturday. I hope Sunday went as well.
I would certainly like to echo all the various comments: grubby locos, the crowded trains, the A4, the delays too in a way (that only meant we ended up having to spend more time on the MHR on a glorious afternoon – I wonder what the weather was really like on 9th July 1967; I hope it was sunny!) and there was the further bonus on Saturday evening of watching a triple header of Bulleid, Ivatt and Standard pull the empty stock away from Alton after the last train of the day.
Well done

Hi Tony
Have a lot of pix of a wonderful event; particularly liked the chalk inscription:  'SOUTHERN STEAM NO SURRENDER' on #35008,  defiantly saying that my
book had a false title!
Overall I thought the smokebox hinges on the Standard 5 were the feature that really made it real !

I would just like to re-iterate what a great day yesterday (7th July) was.  So many loco's looking grubby running with authentic headboards and then the DMMU and Crompton working both the engineers train and the 1510 Alton to Alresford service train. And what's more, sunburn for the first time this summer!
I would like to state what my highlight was for the day but can't.
The Ivatt running the "Lymington Last Steam", the opportunity to travel on three Bulleids in one day, a Crompton passenger service, freight, engineering and breakdown services or even the chance to ride on Bittern's first public run.  Even if it was as crowded as one of SWT's finest commuter services I didn't hear one whimper of discontent.
One question though and not about the excellent day: I noticed in Alton two Class 73s (73104 & 73139) in a poor cosmetic state. What is the story behind these two and is there any opportunity of the railway preserving one or both of these excellent Southern JB's?
Regards
Matt

Thank you Matt; we knew you'd enjoy it. I don't know anything about plans for the 73s   ... tw

Hi Tony
Just the one for now. #19 with her 2nd train to Alton.
It's the digital shot just before the Mamiya shot, which I will not see until next week. (Hope I've got it right)
Full marks to everyone involved at the railway for putting on a bl**dy good show.
What a turn out as well, haven't seen numbers like that for several years.
You've got the formula now, so re-number a few locos, dirty them up, and outshop a fresh A4 every year; hey presto.

Dear Tony
Please pass our thanks on to all concerned with the 40 Years gala. Four of us visited on Saturday and had a wonderful time. It would seem that visitor numbers get larger with each event; at this rate you will need longer trains and longer platforms!
Mention must be made of the buffet crew who seemed to be going non-stop all day; with the number of people wanting food they must need the next week to recover. We were talking about the large numbers using the buffet which gets very crowded on gala days and wondered if the railway could not use a spare coach parked behind the buffet to give more seating?
Looking forward to the next event.

Good morning Tony
Please pass on my thanks, and appreciation, to all at the Line for yesterday. Although there were glitches in the timetable, largely due to the late arrival from what the Rev Awdry would call the 'other railway', the whole day was a triumph. I can never recall having seen standing room only on so many trains on a preserved line. The 'dirtied' engines, plus the gleaning Bittern, were terrific; the combination of 34007 and 33208 on the Steam Dreams service was impressive.
Perhaps the only unauthentic part of the scene was the number of porters in clean white pressed shirts!
I hope that you will making a video/DVD of the 2 days - it would be as successful as the day itself.

Tony
Just wanted to comment on todays events: I thought it was excellent; much better than any recent galas if I'm honest; probably the best event I've seen in the 3½ years I've been volunteering.
It was particularly nice to see the engines looking grubby - it makes them look much more "real" to me than when they're clean.
Also very nice to see Bittern out - though it's not exactly Southern is it?!
And the 33 on a passenger train, of course ...
Same again for the 41st Anniversary? (Though 2008 is 40 years since the actual end of steam, of course...)
My congratulations and thanks to those who organised it!
