We try to make our railway as accessible as possible, given the nature of our heritage buildings, outdoor areas and rolling stock. However, accessibility is not always feasible and we offer a 'Free Carer' ticket* so that you effectively receive half price travel to compensate for the restricted access to our facilities.
*One FREE carer per registered disabled full fare paying visitor. Free Carer Tickets are NOT available on Real Ale Trains, Dining Trains or Santa Specials, as these are on board the train only and so every visitor receives the same offering and experience.
In June 2016 we had an official launch of Bullied Brake S4211 accessible carriage; A lovely airy carriage that will accommodate 5 wheelchairs with tables they can eat at and with room for their carers. The carriage was built by British Railways in 1949 and restored and adapted by both staff and many skilled volunteers. Please contact us or phone on 01962 733810 for up to date information about which carriages are in operation.
All of our standard travel services are capable of carrying from 2 to 6 fixed wheelchairs in the brake compartment, reachable via ramps at any of our stations. We also have a specially adapted carriage with a customised open space designed for wheelchair use with optional tables. On standard travel days the adapted carriage is on the train departing Alresford at 11.00, 1.00 and 3.00, and departing Alton at 12.00, 2.00 and 4.00 but please note this will differ on special event days.
Passengers who are sufficiently mobile are welcome to travel in any part of the train, with their wheelchair stored in the brake compartment. Ramps are available at all stations to aid boarding. Please remember that our volunteer staff are always more than happy to help, so do ask if you have the need!
Please be aware that the fixed seating arrangement of our Dining Trains and Real Ale trains limits such services to sufficiently mobile passengers who are not confined to a wheelchair. Rides behind 'Thomas' and 'Diesel' during Day Out With Thomas are also restricted to sufficiently mobile passengers.
Disabled parking is available at Alresford, with step-less entrance through the main station building and the Old Goods Shed. Disabled toilet and baby changing facilities are provided at Alresford on the ground floor of the Old Goods Shed. Some childrens activities during our special events, such as Day Out With Thomas, are held in the upper room of the Old Goods Shed which is currently only accessible by stairs. Access to platform two is limited to a ramp across the track and our station staff will be more than happy to accompany you across should it be required (opportunities may be limited as operations restrict).
Disabled parking facilities are not available at Ropley and we do not advise visitors to use the free event parking as it is in a field and the route to the station is quite steep. Entry to the station building from both the platform and the front is step-less and disabled toilet facilities are available at Ropley station. As with Alresford access to Platform 1 is limited to a ramp crossing and again our staff will be more than happy to help you across. Ropley yard is also accessible to wheelchair bound visitors as the surface is - on the whole - flat. The elevated picnic area is available via a steep sloping pathway from the centre of platform one, but at the top it is grass with a loose cinder path. The path to the boiler workshop viewing area is also loose cinder.
Medstead & Four Marks Station
Disabled parking facilities are not available at Medstead and unfortunately neither are disabled toilet facilities. Both platforms are accessible through step-less access and again access to either platform can be gained via the cross-track ramp if accompanied by a member of MHR staff.
Disabled parking facilities are available at Alton in the South West Trains car park. The Watercress Line runs from platform 3, and there is a new footbridge with lifts crossing the South West Trains platforms 1 and 2, platform 3 is adjacent. Disabled toilet facilities are available on our platform (pictured right).
