D5353/27007 - Class 27

Status: Overhaul underway

D5353 was delivered new to Eastfield (Glasgow) depot in September 1961 and spent the first 19 years of it life working the Scottish lowlands and the West Highland line. In April 1974 5353 became 27007 under the BR TOPS scheme.

October 1979 saw 27007 enter Glasgow Works for what would be its last major overhaul. March 1980 saw the locomotive transfer to Inverness.

27007 has not enjoyed the most fortunate career, and has had more than its fair share of bad luck. On 3rd February 1983 whilst working the 13:50 Aberdeen Inverness its train became derailed by a broken rail near Elgin, which killed one passenger and a further 8 injured. Then on 21st January 1985 27007 suffered a minor fire in its battery charging circuits, which lead to it being stored out of use at Motherwell pending disposal.

On 31st October 1985 27007 was purchased for use on the Mid Hants railway and moved to the railway via Swindon Works. Its luck had not improved, however, as on 10th July 1986 the locomotive was badly damaged by a fire, and stored for a period of time. The locomotive finally entered service on the Mid Hants railway in 1992 and ran until 2000, when it was withdrawn for a major overhaul.
