Our restored steam railway goes through ten miles of delightful
Hampshire
Countryside. This
includes some of the
steepest gradients of any steam railway in the south of England, so we
use large engines
to haul our authentic
coaches 'over the
Alps' as railway men used
to call this journey. The railway runs between Alton
and Alresford, off the
A31 Guildford to Winchester road.

Up
to six passengers in fixed wheelchairs can be carried in the brake
compartment of any of our trains. Also, coach #3738 has been adapted to
accept wheelchairs with a hinged portion next to the normal door and an
open space.
Wheelchair customers are advised to start and finish their journeys at Alresford as platform access at Alton is normally via a footbridge (but see below). Passengers with folding wheelchairs and who are sufficiently mobile are welcome to travel in any part of the train, their wheelchairs being carried in the brake van. Ramps are provided to ease entry to trains and our volunteer station staff will do all they can to assist less-agile passengers.
Disabled parking available at Alresford and Alton stations (also at Ropley during certain special events - ring for details: 01962 733810)
Our volunteer staff will make your visit easy and happy, with no fuss.
There are toilets for the disabled at Ropley, Alton and Alresford stations, all readily accessible from our platforms.

New crossing at Alton station allows wheelchair access to The Watercress Line (platform 3) without having to negotiate the footbridge and its stairs. Users of this crossing must always be accompanied by Alton Station Staff (MHR or SWT) when using the crossing. All our Alton Station Staff are trained to do this safely, and will be glad to help you. | From:
Lionel & Rita Twiss Sent: 27 September 2007 14:06 Subject: Thank you Whilst we were on holiday in Hampshire we spent a wonderful day on The Watercress Line - the first of your recent steam days. Our son is permanently in a wheel chair and is registered blind. The sounds and smells of the rolling stock meant more to him than probably most of your visitors. The staff could not have been more helpful. At every station we visited help was at hand. Your toilet facilities for the disabled were excellent. Please convey to all the staff who were on duty that day that their courtesy and professionalism was much admired and appreciated Lionel and Rita Twiss North Yorkshire |
