20th-22nd October 2017

Guest Locos:

D9002 "The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry”

D9002 (later 55002) was one of the 22 production Deltics built to replace the streamlined A4 pacifics on the East Coast Main Line between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh.  When they entered service in 1961/62 were the most powerful locomotives in the world at 3300 hp.  The Deltics continued in service until eventual replacement by High Speed Trains, the last being withdrawn from service in 1982, with 55002 being claimed by the National Railway Museum after her last run.

During the Diesel gala D9002 will pass under the former Kings Cross footbridge (now at Ropley) for the first time in 35 years.

47579 "James Nightall GC"

47579 "James Nightall GC" will be attending the gala from its present base at the Mangapps Railway Museum, Burnham on Crouch, Essex.  This will be the first time that this particular locomotive of this class has visited the line.

47579 (originally D1778) was released to traffic in October 1964 and allocated to Tinsley Depot (Sheffield).  The locomotive was named "James Nightall GC” on 28th September 1981 to remember the brave actions of Fireman James Nighthall who was killed on 2nd June 1944 whilst splitting a burning ammunition train at Soham in Cambridgeshire.  His actions along with his Driver, Benjamin Gimbert, saved a far greater disaster, and as a result they were two of the very few railwaymen to be awarded the George Cross for their bravery.
