Vintage Bus Days

Free vintage bus ride from Alton to Jane Austen's House

Home » Events at The Watercress Line

On the first Sunday of the month from May to October a vintage bus service operates from Alton station.

Included in the price of your train ticket, you can take a free ride around the nearby villages on route to Jane Austen's House in nearby Chawton. With 2017 marking the 200th anniversary since Jane Austen's death, this couldn't be a better time to visit the only house that Jane Austen lived and worked that is open as a museum.

This vintage bus service is operated by the Medstead Depot Omnibus Group, who are one of three groups under the Working Omnibus Museum Project Ltd, and their buses frequently visit running days and rallies around the South. MDOG is part of a charity established in the late 1980's which provides a storage depot for 18 vintage buses originally running bus services in the south of England. The buses are owned and maintained by individuals or small groups.

Don't forget the Alton Bus Rally in July every year; it's one of Britain's biggest bus rallies and running days.
