6th April 2001:

Clive was hand-grinding an axlebox hornplate for #73096 today. Attempts to mill this very hard molybdenum steel had failed, so he was blueing to a surface-plate and using wetted carborundum stones on the high spots.

Said his arms were aching, but he'd kept going a lot longer than most could have done.

6th April 2001:

Secret mechanisms will move Thomas's eyes to right and left at our Easter Thomas events. It was all tested today by our specialist electrical engineer Chris Churcher, who gave credit for help to his colleague Keith Cox. The kids will love this!

How many thou in a 'tad' ?
30th March 2001: Bodmin's centre big-end bearing was machined yesterday, blued-in today, the loco was inspected for fitness-to-run (on the main line)  this afternoon, and is out tomorrow (31st March) Alton - Eastbourne. How's that for efficiency!

Neil Davis in the pit beneath Bodmin this morning prepares to offer the bearing to Frank Boait above him.

You're looking up at 45° from the pit, between the frames of #34016, and towards the rear.

Only Frank's boots are visible as he...

... blues the crank-pin to check for the high spots by temporarily assembling the bearing. (Pic taken from running-plate)

The bearing white metal is then hand-scraped to fit before assembly.

The chain-hoists will lift the centre connecting rod back into position.

23rd March 2001:

Looking towards the rear lhs corner inside the water-tank of (Bulleid Merchant Navy Class) P&O Line's tender, presently undergoing major structural surgery at Ropley MPD.

Once this part is completed, Steve and Den will be inside here, welding the deck over the top. Not a job for the claustrophic.

21st March 2001: Ivatt 2-6-2 tank engine #41312 is on a visit to the Gwili Railway (in Carmarthen, Wales) to July 2001, celebrating completion of their line's extension.

2nd April 2001:

Blastpipe  installed into #31625

23rd March 2001:

The tool in Ian's hands is for grinding-in the spherical joints for the main steam pipes of #31625.  Not the most pleasant job, but he'd taken a chair into the smokebox to save his back from the strain.

21st January 2001:  Out in the rain on Ropley down platform, Colin Chambers oils his 45-Ton steam crane ready for the day's lifts

29th November 2000:

Neil Davis does a routine boiler washout on Bodmin ...

.... and here are the numbered washout plugs lined up on the tea-can shelf over the firehole door.

Steve Humby was just out of this shot, making minor alterations to the valve controls on the injectors to make them easier to operate.
