#73096 is stopped for 7-year heavy general overhaul in readiness for re-certification for main-line use.

9th February 2002:

'Swampy' Netherwood under a makeshift shelter preparing the front tubeplate of #73096 boiler to receive the header,
whilst ...

... Keith Loughlin flats the header face in the shed.

They are nearing the end of 2½ days of blueing, checking against a surface-plate, and hand-scraping the high spots.

Geoff Mitchell called in at Ropley on 12th February 2002 with a characteristic photo he'd taken of Keith

24th November 2001:

Leading driving wheels have been installed

... rods have been cleaned   ...

9th October 2001:

The repaired boiler for #73096 returned from Chatham today.

The 17-ton boiler is a tricky lift for the 45-ton steam crane at this radius.

In the background, the boiler for A4 'Bittern' awaits lift onto the lorry for its return trip to Chatham for renovation to start.

9th October 2001:

Now the frames of #73096 can be taken from the shed
to the wheeldrop to have the bogie refitted
Here the bogie is just rising from the depths ..

David Sibley and Kris Tippen grease the bearers ..

... leaving to Frank the tricky final stages of assembly.
