#73096: Heavy General Overhaul 2000-2002

#73096 is stopped for 7-year heavy general overhaul in readiness for re-certification for main-line use.

   


   

25th June 2002:

Clive Meech was dismantling and freeing the seized dampers. Some renovation of the ashpan is needed

Once all the cladding is on the boiler, and the remaining superheater elements are installed, the boiler will be lifted for the ashpan to be fitted, and the boiler will be lowered into the frames

25th June 2002:  

Andy (in his hi-tech electronic mask) repairs a superheater element

A steam crane helped move the boiler a few more inches away from the coal dock for access to fit insulation and cladding, and also lifted up the manifold

12th June 2002:

Rivetting the smokebox onto the boiler.  Dave heats the rivets in a hearth of old brick arch, John passes the rivets to Jim, who then applies a pneumatic rivet hammer whilst Andy does the same on the outside.  Hence the ear defenders !

A warming fire had been lit on the grate of #73096's boiler this morning in readiness for the steam test

Boiler for #73096 was sanded and painted in heat-resistant silver.  It will be hydraulically tested, then steamed in situ before refitting into the frames now back in the shed
