Duncan put the final coat of Brunswick Green on #73096 today. The cab had been done and he was painting Roger Ventin's new dome by mid-morning.

| In the second pic (about 5 pm) Duncan was grumbling about suicidal tiny flies (which suddenly appeared after brief rain outside), and the last pic is just another view showing the finished tender and the lining which the loco too will have. |

| 3rd September 2002:
"Last major component of #73096 and it's done" - said Andy. He's blueing-in the bronze regulator main valve to the cast iron valve body below, scraping off tenths-of-thou to get the valve steam-tight around the whole contact area. You can clearly see the two triangular ports of 'first valve'. These allow steam through first as you open the regulator and reduce the pressure difference across the whole valve, thus making the big 'second' valve easier to slide open. |

| Offering up the main valve and (above right) Andy shows how the 'first
valve' fits. Note the elongated holes so that the first valve opens before
the main valve moves.
Closeup of the valve. The engineer's blue transferred from the cast iron valve body shows the high spots. When the blue makes a continuous ring around the centre of the contact area, you're winning! Any gaps and the valve will 'blow by' and the fault will inevitably worsen. Photos (3rd September 2002): Tony Wood
