20th June 2005:

Rod Tye (with new volunteer Kim Kouth) fires #92212 for its formal steam test.

(It passed of course; nothing is submitted unless we're sure it's OK.)

#92212's superheater header looks ready to install:

#92212's boiler passed its hydraulic ("cold") test today ...

and there's more progress with machining the superheater element ball-ends

18th May 2005:

Work on the boiler of 9F #92212 is going well.

Bert Hitchen anneals a replacement steel ring. It reinforces the joint between the copper main steam pipe and the front tubeplate.

Les explained the problem (11th May 2005)

Here's the ring, fitted and expanded using the tool shown, right.

As Bubbles put all his weight on the spanner with the three-foot samson bar from outside the smokebox to turn the hexagon, the other end rolled, gradually expanding, inside the ring

11th May 2005:

Now that the crown stays of 9F #92212 have been replaced, the leak at the main steam pipe (regulator to superheater header) has been investigated and its source traced

When I caught up with Les*, he was wheeling back a barrow with a big expander he'd borrowed from Andy in the Boiler Department to expand the pipe in the tubeplate

*Owner of #92212 explains the leak (MP3 file, 400KB, 11th May 2005)

Water was dribbling between the pipe and front tubeplate (at about 7 o'clock: click photo for a closer view). Note nothing remains of the steel reinforcing ring (see 18th May)

21st February 2005:

Bert and Bubbles have removed about 300 crown stays from 9F #92212, leaving only a few to support the firebox. They've started on some side stays.

1st February 2005:

Neil ("Bubbles") Henderson and Bert Hitchen have been busy, as evidenced by the mounting pile of crown stays removed from 9F #92212

20th January 2005:

Note the long oxy-acetylene torch held by Bert Hitchen.

He manipulates this through an inspection hole, guided verbally by Neil Henderson, watching through another inspection hole. Neil (Bubbles) uses the wire loop to hold the cut piece to stop it falling to the bottom of the water-space

.

Inside 9F #92212 boiler, facing the firebox: I'm sitting on the smoketubes with my shoulders out of the dome and the camera in my lap.

You can see the holes (top right) where Bert and Neil have so far removed about a quarter of the crown-stays. The cut ends of the stays are discernible.

Click the photo to see the cutting process:
I could certainly feel the heat!

14th January 2005:

Contractors have started the tedious and uncomfortable job of removing crown stays from #92212 for replacement. At least the 9F is in the shed for the work.
