Rebuilt West Country 'Bodmin' #34016

Progress with Heavy General Overhaul 5

28th February 2000

Steve Humby and Frank Boait drill Bodmin's ashpan.

21st February 2000:

Bodmin's boiler in yard, accessible for smokebox rivetting (see below).

17th February 2000

The smokebox was fitted on 15th Feb and about half of its rivetting to the boiler had been done by the 17th.

It was relatively peaceful with Steve Humby and Peter Smith here at the muscle-racking task of drilling and reaming the holes for bolting the smokebox to the saddle.

21st Feb 2000:

Graham took my place with the torch so I could take this pic. Frank in the smokebox with one pneumatic hammer, David outside with the other. Earplugs and defenders all round.

Afternoon:  fitting the crinoline.
(Added 3rd March 2000, taken 23rd February 2000 by Geoff Meekums):  Bodmin's firebox has a fire lit for the first time since renovation.

24th Feb 2000

Bodmin's boiler was brought slowly up to pressure with a fire on a steel plate under the firebox, and a makeshift firedoor.

Good view here too of the crinoline which will space the cladding over the insulation.

A few leaks at stays were remedied by caulking, but in the smokebox  (below, rare inside closeup viewpoint) there were blows where tube-plate rivets had not been fully driven.
