21st February 2000: Bodmin's boiler in yard, accessible for smokebox rivetting (see below).

February 2000 The smokebox was fitted on 15th Feb and about half of its rivetting to the boiler had been done by the 17th. It was relatively peaceful with Steve Humby and Peter Smith here at the muscle-racking task of drilling and reaming the holes for bolting the smokebox to the saddle.

Bodmin's boiler was brought slowly up to pressure with a fire on a steel plate under the firebox, and a makeshift firedoor. Good view here too of the crinoline which will space the cladding over the insulation. A few leaks at stays were remedied by caulking, but in the smokebox (below, rare inside closeup viewpoint) there were blows where tube-plate rivets had not been fully driven. |
