Rebuilt West Country 'Bodmin' #34016

Progress with Heavy General Overhaul 9

24th May 2000

Inside the Loco Shed today.  Duncan was painting the smokebox, David was bending small copper pipe for various drains, Steve was working on cab fittings, Clive fitted the petticoat, Ron was fitting the electric lighting in the cab.

I missed most of it as I was outside, concreting-in the blastpipe of the S15 ready for Friday's footplate courses.  ... tw

Straight from the horse's mouth, here's the blackboard showing work yet to be done as at 0800hr 19th May 2000.

I saw that the three main steampipes are now installed, and David Sibley was fitting the pieces which seal them to the smokebox when I passed at mid-day. Someone should put that hammer out of David's reach: he's not really a Bulleid loco enthusiast: during maintenance, a MHR Bulleid loco becomes a four-letter word zone so we have to close the yard!  David is usually involved.      d:-)

Barry Eden has put the transfers on.

10th May 2000

Bodmin's black and orange lining is now well advanced.
You should see how Rich
has polished up the nameplate and crest!  (photos soon)

(Richard Walters drove over from his home in Switzerland to spend a couple of weeks as a volunteer working in Ropley MPD.  He's not the only long-distance volunteer coming to help us in the Loco Shed:  Brother Daniel, a German monk, will be spending his usual fortnight with us this summer, and we'll also be welcoming Kyoichi Oda from Japan for his first time as a Loco Shed volunteer.)

10th May 2000

Inside Bodmin's smokebox (about the size of a small caravan!) we fitted Bodmin's superheater elements to the header today.  There are four rows of eight elements, each of which is held by a T-bolt and 1" Whitworth nut.

10th May 2000

Keith and John tightening the first row with socket spanner, ratchet drive and samson bar.
By the end of the day, we'd finished three rows, and had the fourth row in place but not bolted up.  The three main steampipes to the valvechests fit to the 5-stud flanges above.

13th May 2000:

I noticed as I passed on Friday that all elements were in and tightened.  One steampipe had been fitted. No time for pics as I was firing the Ivatt for footplate courses.
