Now awaiting the signwriter for the lining and any lettering needing to be done by hand. Duncan will do the bits for which he has transfers himself.

Update 3rd August 2005:  Tony Wood

Duncan had locked the shed end doors again; he'd arrived very early to undercoat the other side and didn't want it spoilt with dust blown in

(The half-a-face you can see belongs to Daniel, on his annual pilgrimage to MHR from Germany. We're all always pleased to see him.) He was helping to remove a piston from a piston rod of #73096 - it's having a new piston made.

26th May 2005:

Duncan's next project has arrived: a Pullman.

The other side is a mess of graffiti. Our website policy is never to give publicity to this vandalism

4th May 2005 :

Big doors stayed locked shut today whilst Duncan put the finishing gloss on BCK (Brake Composite Corridor) coach #W21236

"I don't want dust blowing in, so you'll just have to use the little door the other end", he said.

Peter Cutler asked (26th May 2005): "Is it worth adding to your notes accompanying the photo of the overhauled coach, that it has been given orange banding as it retains its mainline certification?"
Most certainly, Peter. TYVM. The orange line along the roof gutter warns about overhead power lines on the main line. The coach has now been renumbered in accordance with its Southern livery to S21236 ... tw

13th April 2005:

BCK (Brake Composite Corridor) coach #W21236  has primer and filler in evidence. Duncan showed me new wooden panels inside, but I couldn't see how to make an interesting picture of them: best come and see for yourself when the coach is in service later this month

28th February 2005:

BCK (Brake Composite Corridor) #W21236 is now in the shed for restoration.

It has second class and first class compartments, toilets and ...

... its original goods cage.

Duncan points out where the roof had been leaking,
but generally the coach is in quite good nick.

"Looks worse than it really is" - he said

1st February 2005:

Bulleid brake carriage #4211 (note transfers show the correct 'S4211S' to show that it's of Southern Railway origin, designated to Southern Region) is outside on the pit to have brake rigging connected, and to have its vacuum brake system tested.    More about #4211

28th January 2005:

Original bogies for Bulleid brake carriage #4211 were both re-wheeled (see also 20th January 2005, below)

The 45-ton steam crane is a chunky piece of kit and behaves like it, but it can raise or lower its hook with surprising delicacy and is ideal for the tricky business of fitting the horns over axlebox horn-guides.

They're waiting for me to man the other axlebox

The coach will be mounted on the bogies on 28 Jan.

20th January 2005:

Duncan has repainted Bulleid brake #4211. Later, he and Jim Lawrence applied the side and end transfers. Externally, it just needs the battery-charging electrics finished, and the bogies replaced with the originals.  The Vintage Carriage Group have been renovating the interior

23rd November 2004:

The Vintage Carriage Group's Bulleid brake 4211 is in for maintenance, and conversion for use by passengers using wheelchairs. Its bogies were removed for tyres to be re-profiled.

The coach is supported on sleepers (because the pivots don't match) over the same Mk1 accommodation bogies used for TSO 4712, and Duncan has started flatting the exterior for painting.  VCG members are working on the interior of the vehicle

After lunch, TSO 4712 was moved to the yard to refit its bogies

Duncan's finished repainting Mk1 TSO #4712.

It's still on accommodation bogies, but a steam crane will soon be summoned to replace it on its own renovated ones (see below, 27th October)

New vestibule for buggies and prams in TSO #4712. Bubs and tw were making a start on bushes to remedy wear in the braking system

22nd September 2004:

Now that the 9F has left the painting road in the shed, renovation of Mk1 TSO coach #4712 can continue.

Bernard has been working every Wednesday on the innovative pram and buggy vestibule, which is looking very smart.

We plan to have it available for use on the Santa Specials

 20th July 2004:

Coach #4712 has been completely reupholstered, and the country-end toilets have been removed to create a large vestibule for our customers' pushchairs and buggies.

It currently rests on accommodation bogies whilst the originals we've newly refurbished await assembly (below).  Because the brake rod arrangement on this coach is different, we can't simply replace the bogies from our stock of spares
