Extending a siding beside the running line
at Alton on Friday 20th February 1998

Laying sleepers with a rail-mountable loader.

Volunteers supervised by Paul Hawley (Operations Manager - standing knee-akimbo on the wagon) and Jim Poulton (S&T Manager - foreground, left.)

Frank Twine (P-Way Manager) checks the seating of the rail just laid by DS414, the ex-Woking 10-ton steam crane .

We started the day three feet from the wagon in the distance, and set and fishplated fifteen pairs.  Clips to be fitted and alignment adjusted in the following days.

The crane lowers its jib under a road-bridge.

Not a third rail:  it's the next length for laying.

Rails are aligned with jack and hammer.

Paul and Ian fit a fishplate, tightening the nuts with a petrol-driven impact spanner.

Wickham trolley for the people, and 08 diesel for the materials
 Last sleepers.
