Infrastructure Work on Mid-Hants Railway

(2005-2006)

1st August 2006:

First thing on the list of tasks for the day is 'drink tea'. Following this we trundled down to Alresford where we found more tea thrust in our path.

After erecting some 50 metres of chain link fence we felt it was probably time for tea.
We were 'found' and allotted the task of shifting the cast iron water trough from the station yard to the cattle dock and manoeuvring it into place in the pens.

First you remove the rotten sleepers....

.... then you scour the line for spare ballast to finish the job

27th January 2006:

Mid-week P-Way gang setting off for Alresford to add more fence panels to the restored picnic area.

With the help of Ben's gutsy little tractor, a good length of fence was erected. Those without a bad back were heavily out-numbered by those with a bad back.  As you can see from the last shot, no one was proud enough to show their face to the camera!

Jacking and packing at Medstead on 13 September 2005.

The time recorded in image file is 08:01, but that does seem a tad optimistic, given the usual arrival time of one here present and the railway ritual known as tea drinking

29th April 2005:

Last weekend marked the end of another stage of fitting the 'hardware' for the Alton to Medstead Signalling Project.
Many have seen the propagation of the location boxes at Medstead (and there have been comments that they don't match). S&T group has been digging holes and planting concrete troughs from the rear of the signal box , behind the oil lamp store and along the platform to just behind the up starter signal. This troughing will contain wires for the link between Alton and Medstead, and connect via the location boxes.

Alongside the external work, other members have been installing the trunking that carries the connections internally, fixing the plastic trunking in the 'under box' and accessing the main box through holes in the flooring. At the end of the weekend there was a very pleasing feeling throughout the group that this is another step towards the project's completion, and now we can get on with some of the lighter work of putting in cables and connecting-up
