Apprentice Boilersmith
Mid-Hants Railway Ltd. is seeking ideally a school leaver to train as a
locomotive boilersmith in the new boiler repair facility currently
under construction at our engineering works at Ropley (SO24 0BL)
This exciting long-term opportunity would give the right candidate a
thorough and solid engineering craft based skill in the repair and
maintenance of locomotive steam boilers and other forms of pressure
plant.
Job Specification
Responsible to the Locomotive engineering manager and boiler shop
foreman, working as part of a small team within the boiler repair shop
of our motive power depot.
The person ideally will be a school leaver this June 2009 with good
grades in GCSE Maths, English and a science/technical subject.
This is for an initial period of two years, with possible extension
subject to performance and the railway’s business prospects. You
will be primarily engaged in ‘on the job’ training with
other members of the team and will be taught boilermaking skills linked
to the requirements of locomotive type steam boilers, to involve
riveting, tubing, replacing stays, copper firebox repairs, repairs to
superheaters and pressure pipework.
You will be taught arc and gas welding/cutting skills by current welders, gaining coding to recognised engineering standards.
The work is linked to the overhaul and maintenance of all types of
boiler mountings, and the repair and adjustment of boiler safety valves
under steam for insurance purposes.
Pressure testing, instrument repair and calibration will also be included as this falls within our field of activities.
Locomotive boilers are heavy on maintenance so you will be trained to
carry out boiler washouts, boiler water quality testing and prepare
boilers for insurance examinations.
During the course of the training period you may have the opportunity
to receive training under supervision in other aspects of engineering
disciplines such as in the machine shop and fitting shops, and
undertaking running gear maintenance.
Day release to a local technical college will be available in order to gain relevant qualifications.
You must be physically very fit as this work is arduous, and be
prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Adherence to
the railway’s health & safety rules is of paramount
importance.

Mid-Hants Railway Ltd. is seeking ideally a
school leaver to be trained in carpentry skills mainly at our
engineering works at Ropley (SO24 0BL).
The right candidate would gain a thorough and solid craft based skill
in traditional carpentry and joinery, plus general experience in a
range of other woodworking tasks. They would be responsible to
the railway’s professional carpenter as part of a two person team
dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of historic buildings and
railway rolling stock.
Job Specification
This exciting opportunity is to work with our
skilled carpenter on a number of key projects linked to a grant from
the Heritage Lottery Fund; specifically the restoration / overhaul of
three wooden framed coaches and the re-erection / renovation of a 19th
century wooden signal box for use as a visitor attraction housing a
signalling experience.
There may also be a requirement to work with other staff on fitting out
wooden panelling, window frames etc inside our main fleet of coaches;
and an opportunity (mainly at weekends) to join our small team of
volunteers who maintain the various buildings along the railway.
This would enable to candidate to work with other skilled staff.
Training will be given in traditional carpentry and joinery skills, and in the use of woodworking machinery.
The person ideally will be a school leaver June / July 2009 with good
grades in GCSE Maths and English and a science / technical subject or
woodwork.
Flexibility in tasks allocated is essential and the candidate must be
keen to learn, be fit and willing to work at times outside in all
weathers. Adherence to the railway’s health & safety
rules is of paramount importance.
Day release to a local technical college will be available in order to gain relevant qualifications.
