Removing wheels

Ever wondered how we remove wheels from a steam locomotive?

One of the heaviest tasks undertaken is the removal of wheels from a locomotive.
There are a few ways you can remove wheels from a steam locomotive:
1) lift the engine using a crane but this causes stress on the frames
2) use a wheel drop.

Here at the Watercress Line we use a wheel drop to remove wheels from our steam locomotives. These can be either electrically or hydraulically powered.

How does it work?
The locomotive will run over the drop table and the wheels to be removed are lowered below rail level. Temporary rails are positioned to bridge the gap, and the engine is moved out of the way. The wheels can then be raised and rolled away.

Watch our short animation to see it in action!
