Class 47 diesel locomotive 47579 “James Nightall GC” will be your locomotive for this service, it is on extended loan to us from its present base at the Mangapps Railway Museum, Burnham on Crouch, Essex. The locomotive was named “James Nightall GC” on 28th September 1981 to remember a railwayman who posthumously received the George Cross medal for the gallantry he showed during the Soham Railway Disaster. James Nightall was the fireman accompanying Benjamin Gimbert on a 51 wagon ammunition train in 1944. When one of the wagons caught fire both men worked to uncouple the wagon from the rest of the train. Nightall aged 22, was killed when the wagon exploded, this also destroyed Soham railway station and damaged hundreds of nearby houses, while Gimbert miraculously survived. Both men were awarded the George Cross.
