Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June 2019 to mark the 75th Anniversary of the D Day landings.
Transport yourself back in time to the 1940s, against the backdrop of a Second World War railway, to experience the 'Blitz Spirit'. See timetable below for basic departure times.
Enjoy unlimited train travel and mingle with civilian and military re-enactors, hop off at each station to explore period displays, music, dancing, vintage vehicles and stalls selling retro wares.
Each station provides you with a different experience of life in wartime Britain. Help run the recreated RAF Plotting Room, dance alongside 'Now That's Jive Company B', learn about the ‘Home Front’ and wartime railway manufacturing or have your hair styled for the 40s.
‘Pearl’s Pin-up Parlour’ will be on hand at Ropley Station to give guests the 40s look, with nostalgic hair-dos and vintage make-up and there will be an American-styled Donut Wagon for all those visitors with a sweet tooth at Alresford Station.
Ropley station will be decorated with vibrant, crochet poppies to commemorate wartime soldiers and the Saturday event will even feature an exciting Spitfire flying over Ropley.
A self-guided walk will explore the local market town of Alresford; exploring places with links to American troops, passing an exhibition in the Goods Shed at Alresford Station and visiting the war memorials.Local Alresford businesses are also immersing themselves in the event, by dressing their shop window displays with an ‘Americans in Alresford’. There will be a competition for the best-dressed, most creative period display, which will be judged by Major 5X5 and the Now That’s Jive dance troop.
War on the Line is as much about reliving this period as enjoying the rush of the steam engine.
Whether the day out means the chance to dress up in your own period costume, or just to come along to soak up the atmosphere, War on the Line is a unique way to enjoy a day on the railway.
