Pre Spring Steam Gala

Commemorating 50 years since the end of BR steam

Home » Events at The Watercress Line

9th - 11th February 2018

*UPDATE*

Over the Christmas period, events have conspired against us and the 1968 themed guest engine we hoped to have had to be withdrawn from our Gala by its home railway due to motive power shortage. We have however, managed at short notice to secure an alternative second guest locomotive from our friends at the Seven Valley Railway in the form of 15xx Class 1501.

This wasn't all the misfortune we had over Christmas as both 45379 and our guest engine 45231 failed. Our engineers at Ropley are working hard together with Loco Services to get them both repaired in time, and we are still hopeful they will. Please check this webpage and Facebook event page for updates.

*As a result of the above, we have decided to reduce the ticket price to £20.* If tickets have been bought already, please email Reservations on reservations@watercressline.co.uk

If our Black 5's are repaired in time - we are still planning to recreate as below:

2018 marks 50 years since the end of steam on British Rail and to commemorate that historic occasion we are pleased to welcome as a guest locomotive 'Black 5' No. 45231,a former resident of ours. This is entirely appropriate as 'Black 5s' were by far the most numerous steam class in the last years of steam and a pair of them headed the famous last BR steam train, the 15 guinea special, from Carlisle to Manchester on 11 August 1968.

We aim to recreate this spectacle by pairing No.45231 with our own No.45379 with a replica 1T57 reporting number. Both locos were built by Armstrong Whitworth in 1937 and are two of 18 survivors from a class of 842 locomotives. No.45231 carries its post preservation name, 'The Sherwood Forester' and appears with our thanks to Jeremy Hosking's Locomotive Services Limited.

We will be running our MHR goods train throughout the Gala.
