Annual Sponsored Walk on Saturday 9th November 2019
It is Time for Some More Exercise… to raise funds for the Watercress Line.
This is the one time during the year when you can experience the railway from a completely different view by walking along the trackbed of the Watercress Line. From track level you get to fully appreciate the gradients our locomotives and footplate crews have to tackle to haul trains along our 10 mile line and 'Over the Alps' at its highest point in Medstead. An added attraction this year is to walk over the new bridge, built at Butts Junction, Alton.
All walkers are encouraged to collect sponsorship, which will be used to fund the restoration of our flagship locomotive, Merchant Navy class no.35005 Canadian Pacific.
The Choice of Walks
There are 3 lengths of walk that you can choose from -
• the full 10 miles from Alton Station and ‘Over the Alps’ to Alresford Station
• the 6 miles Downhill from Medstead and Four Marks Station to Alresford Station (our Firemen tell us that walking downhill is much easier than shovelling uphill!)
• the 3 miles Family Stroll from Ropley Station to Alresford Station.
An Entry Fee of £10 is required for each walker that is 16 years or older.
There is no entry fee for walkers under 16 years, but they must be accompanied by a person that is 16 years or older.
There is no entry fee for dogs, but they must be kept on a lead during the walk.
We would really appreciate your using the walk to obtain sponsorship that can be donated to our charity, the Mid Hants Railway Preservation Society (MHRPS). For UK Taxpayers, such donations will enable us to claim Gift Aid from HMRC, which is worth an additional 25%
As an incentive, any walker that collects sponsorship of £50 or more will have their Entry Fee waived.
We would prefer that you collect your sponsorship online with Virgin Money Giving (this will help us considerably in streamlining our administration). Please Click here to sponsor.
Alternatively, from July onwards, you may download a sponsorship form from this site and use it to collect your sponsorship.
On the day
There is no need to notify us in advance, you can just turn up on the day.
We will be providing a free vintage bus service between the stations.
We have streamlined our pre-walk administration processes for 2019 and hope to be able to complete the formalities very quickly, so that everyone can start their walk with minimal delay.
We will provide light refreshments at each station and there are also toilets available at the stations.
We will provide a certificate for all walkers arriving at Alresford, having completed their walk.
How did we do in 2018?
Our Walk the Line event on Saturday 10th November 2018 substantially exceeded our expectations - over 950 walkers took part (double that for 2017) and over £15,000 was raised. These funds have been used by our permanent way department for the purchase of new ballast for 1000 yards of track between Ropley and Medstead & Four Marks.
Thanks, as always, to all our volunteers who helped on the day and to all who took part in the walk.
