Waterloo to Alton

Relive the golden age of steam in the heart of the English countryside, just an hour away from London. Experience the nostalgic sights, sounds and smells of a working steam railway as you travel for ten miles on the Watercress Line between Alton and Alresford in the historic county of Hampshire.

Travel by modern train from London Waterloo to Alton station with South Western Trains; direct trains run every 30 minutes throughout the day for this one hour ten minute journey. When you arrive at Alton station simply cross to platform 3 and purchase your Watercress Line ticket. From May to the end of September steam trains depart at 12.00 and 2.00 every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and additionally at 10.50, 12.50 and 2.50 on Saturday and Sunday. From the end of July and throughout August all five departures run every day. Fares give you all day travel so that you can explore the four period stations and the surrounding area.

Alton is famous for its literary connection; Jane Austen’s House Museum is just a one mile taxi ride away in the village of Chawton. This is Jane Austen’s last home where she lived with her mother and sister for eight years, writing and revising her famous novels, and is open daily from 10.30 – 4.30.

At the other end of the line the historic Georgian town of Alresford awaits you. With boutique shops and cafes and a short picturesque river walk, this is a slice of English life at its very best!

The last steam train back from Alresford departs at 3.00, giving you plenty of time to catch the regular trains back to Waterloo for an evening in London. Or you might like to extend your stay overnight in one of the local hotels and get a real taste of these rural towns!
